USMLE Review

Preparing for the USMLE Step 1 is a long and difficult task. While you may initially be motivated and spend significant amount of money purchasing review material, the products you accumulate may soon become intimidating. That intimidation and long hours of studying can easily translate into mental exhaustion, leading to loss of motivation, inefficient use of study time, and poor concentration. The goal is to keep yourself at your peak performance throughout the day. Take regular, scheduled breaks, and stay on top of your study schedule so that you can take advantage of the free days to take a break from the continuous mental exercise. Do not get into the habit of cramming or simply memorizing a topic, because you are likely to forget it in the future or apply it incorrectly on the step 1 exam.
1. Read, commit to memory, and think critically about the material ahead of the review session. The purpose of the review sessions is to begin by clarifying any questions you have about the review material. A series of questions designed to ensure that you understand the core material are asked, and going through those questions rapidly is in your best interest so that time can be better spent improving any weaknesses and working on questions.
2. Based on your level of preparation and understanding of the material, significant time will be devoted to an interactive session going through pertinent questions and relevant answer choices for the material at hand. The questions are designed to help you think critically about the material, and the interactive sessions are designed to test the depth and breadth of your knowledge. Relationships to other topics related to the clinical cases or various topics will also be covered to help interconnect various important parts of medicine.
3. After completing each review session, you should write short 1 or 2 paragraph explanations for each of the clinical cases. Summarize the clinical case by highlighting the essential information in a short blurb, then approach each answer choice and explain why it is correct or incorrect. Summarize the explanation by which of the answer choices is the best answer and explain your reasoning why.
4. Keep a list of questions and your weak points and we will discuss them in the upcoming review session.

The United States Medical Licensing Examination is taken throughout the year by medical students and residents around the country. It is used by residency programs as one measure of the caliber of potential candidates and is required to become a physician eligible to practice medicine. Poor performance on the USMLE is likely to adversely affect your application for residency, may limit the opportunities available for you in career selection, and jeopardizes your medical career.
